Abstract

This study describes the design, development, and experimental validation of the Motorcycle Autonomous Emergency Steering (MAES) system, an active emergency steering system whose ambition is to avoid one of the most dangerous impact configurations: the collision between motorcycles and cars. The MAES system, previously only theorized, is here realized as a development platform, with the primary goal of executing an evasive maneuver (lane change) with a lateral displacement of approximately 2 meters in about 1 second. The work focuses on developing a robust closed-loop control system based on the roll angle. A multi-stage validation methodology, including extensive Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulations, guaranteed the system's safety and effectiveness. On-road tests finally confirmed that the MAES intervention is predictable and controllable, successfully achieving the required lateral displacement target.
